Change Up

By Michele Smith

Then, of course, there is the changeup, or an off-speed pitch. You want to look explosive,
driving off the mound, and then, you know, hopefully, the speed of the pitch is going to be
about 25% slower than your hardest pitch.

You can throw a changeup pitch with a lot of different grips. I can throw it out of my riseball
grip so that people can't pick it. Because a lot of times they'll try to pick your grips. If they
see a finger tuck, they'll think that's a rise. Well, if I can throw my changeup out of that same
grip, they don't know if it's my rise or my changeup. What I like to do is hold it deeper in the
palm of my hand, tuck a finger so it looks like my riseball, and put all my fingers on the ball
just like this.
